Rape of the Sabine Women by Nicolaus Poussin
Rape of the Sabine Women by Nicolaus Poussin

Is the United States destined to collapse like the ancient Roman Republic?  I had a chance to examine some of the historical parallels in a new book by Joseph Nye titled Is the American Century Over?

My review of Nye appears in the most recent edition of the Los Angeles Review of Books.

What did I learn about Nye’s perspective?

You’ll have to visit the review to check it out.  I’m not trying to be difficult.  I’m really not.  I swear.  I just learned, in the course of reading Nye’s superb book, that black-and-white questions don’t have black-and-white answers.  It’s far more complicated — which can be both troubling and reassuring all at the same time.

Enjoy, my friends. I wish you all well.

  1. Well done, Nick. I especially liked the line, …”an attempt in the truest Montaignean sense to capture the essence of the topic…” I expect predicting the decline and fall of anything is sort of like predicting what fashion will become fashionable in the next season, or next year. It’s usually a re-do of something that’s come before. But your review is intriguing enough to make me want to have a look-see. I put it on the list.
Hope other writing is going well. Janet

  2. Thank you Janet! Your feedback is especially appreciated always. Nye is good, but (I hate to say) I think my review conveys the gist/all you need to know! Nearing the end of my book and feeling the strange sense of satisfaction and sorrow

  3. Thanks OGandB — it’s good hearing from you. I’ve been off the radar of late for several reasons … probably another few weeks like that are ahead of me. Just wanted to pop up and say thank you
